The fusion of Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely and Huntingdon and Peterborough in 1974 gave birth to Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service. It is the statutory fire service for the shire districts of Cambridgeshire and the unitary authority of Peterborough. Specifically, it covers the districts of Cambridge, South Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Peterborough, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire; and the main station is based at Huntingdon.
The force is operating 28 fire stations, of which 4 are operating 24 hours, 3 stations are crewed only at daytime, 20 stations are operated by retained personnel and 1 station is a volunteer station.
The whole-time stations are the Cambridge which has 2 Water Tenders, Rescue Tender, and Tumtable Ladder; the Dogsthorpe which has Water Tender, Rescue Tender and Aerial Platform; the Stanground which has Water Tender, and Incident Response Unit; and the Huntingdon which has 2 Water Tenders, Rescue Tender, Command Unit, Water/Foam Carrier, and High Volume Pump.
On the other hand, the retained stations are based at Cottenham, Gamlingay, Linton, Papworth Evevard, and Sawston at South Cambridgeshire; at Kimbolton, Ramsey. Sawtry, St. Ives and Yaxley all located at Huntingdonshire; Thorney at Peterborough; Chatteris, Manea, March, and Whittlesey at Fenland; Burwell, Littleport, Soham, Sutton, Swaffham Bulbeck all located at the East of Cambridgeshire.
