During 1948, there were 3 fire brigades operating within Lincolnshire covering Kesteven, Holland and Lindsey with the latter as the biggest, and Grimsby had its own fire brigade. However, after 1974, both Lindsey and Grimsby were transferred to Humberside Fire and Rescue Service’s jurisdiction. Hence, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service is the statutory fire and rescue service of Lincolnshire which has an area of 5,921 kilometers square homing 750,000 people.
The service has 38 operational fire stations scattered throughout the area. The headquarters is located in Lincoln and is managed by Chief Fire Officer Mike Thomas. Most of the stations are operating based on a retained duty system as a consequence of undeniable distances between main towns. As a matter of fact, the service was recognized as the slowest average time to respond because of the distance. In addition, there are 20 stations operating as co-responders. The service has 900 firefighters and staff, including the 200 fulltime firefighters.
The service is the first fire services in UK that had its new fire service uniform which happened last April 1, 2009.
