North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Services follows the guidelines and responsibilities set out by Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004. It covers an area of more than 8,280 square kilometers which makes it the second fire service covering a large area. It actually covers the 7 districts of North Yorkshire and the City of York.

The service performs variety of tasks. The functions are divided into 3 areas, 1 of which is Prevention. This means to say that the service invests so much effort in preventing the occurrences of fires and they educate and inform the public regarding fire prevention measures. This activity minimizes accidents and loss of individuals in the community. Their role is not only confined to fire related incidents but they work as well together with other partners to create a safe community.

Next to Prevention, is the Fire Protection. This area works together with the Prevention personnel to create a more safe community. This involves consultations and enforcement of laws/policies on fire safety in establishments.

The third area is the Intervention which is responding to emergency calls related top fires, road/traffic accidents, chemical spillages, flooding, etc. The service is willing and committed to undertake responsibilities which are life threatening in a just a call.
