UK Firefighters

remembrance 2011 UK FirefightersA country cannot stand on its own without being supported by a strong government that provides all the public services that every citizen needs. In order to keep a community successful, there must be peace and order. From steadfast plans and effective outputs, working together with all the knowledge, skills and authorities, peace and order can be attained- once a country maintains these qualities, success is visible.

However, governing a country has many complications and having a dedicated public service with  great performance is a massive challenge. Though dispute and hindrances might affect the work, one of United Kingdom’s public service systems continue on working very hard for the betterment of the nation- they are the fire-fighters.

UK fire-fighters are extensively trained rescuers primarily to put out hazardous fires that threaten civilian populations and property, to rescue people from car incidents, collapsed and burning buildings and other such situations. Their main goal in the community is to maintain  personal safety, save victims’ lives, save property, and protect the environment.

On incidents that involve fire, ordinary people with no specific training do not have the capability of putting fire out especially if it’s a massive accident. Fire-fighters and the nearest fire brigade are the ones that have to be called on to. In every community, a fire brigade’s roles are:

Prevent fire from happening

Anything that is combustible and flammable can be a source of fire. Some of these may be found in the confines of someone’s home, work place or even in public. When preventing fires and accidents, fire-fighters ensure that no place simultaneously has sufficient heat, fuel and air to allow ignition and combustion. Aside from these, fire brigades often conduct seminars in schools, offices and communities that teach the citizens how to prevent fire and how to handle situations involving fire.

Ensure that lives of the people involved and even the co-fire-fighters are safe

safety at work UK FirefightersDuring a fire, everybody’s lives are at risk- even those who are well-equipped and well-trained for such dire situations. This is why fire brigades obligate their fire-fighters to work in teams. Plus, a fire fighter must have the complete gears and equipments before leaving the brigade to the destination. Some of the essentials are the SCBA or self-contained breathing apparatus, a full face mask that creates a passageway for air to the firefighter without letting them inhale the toxins and smoke coming from the fire. Another is PASS or Personal Alert Safety System, a tool that informs the others that the firefighter is immobile for a period of time.

Rescue Operations

Fire-fighters in the beginning are trained to save people’s lives that are jeopardy. Fire-fighters are trained to rescue and conduct basic and semi-advanced first aid in times of need whenever the and emergency medical service isn’t in the affected vicinity yet. Rescue operations consist of searching for and removing trapped occupants of hazardous conditions. Some of these situations are  being trapped in a building, being injured and immobile in the wilderness and being stuck in an earthquake destruction.
